Light test was today. Scores will be posted ASAP since Mr. Frenzel will be gone until Monday.
Today we took a practice quiz to see where we were at. Scores suggest that we are ready for our Light test tomorrow. We also experimented with the angle of reflection using smoke, lasers, and mirrors.
Today we looked at the primary colors of light (red, blue, and green) and explored how they are different from the primary colors of paint (red, blue, and yellow). We looked at different colored papers under these lights to see what reflected light looks like. We also reviewed the colors of the light spectrum (ROYGBIV).
Today we learned the how light is reflected off of a surface and how the two angles correspond to each other. We also learned ROYGBIV as the way to remember the order of the colors of the rainbow.
Bill Nye explained principles of light today in place of Mr. Frenzel.
Today we learned about three categories of how light passes through an object. Opaque items do not allow light to pass through, translucent allows some light to pass through, and transparent lets nearly all light through. To learn this we looked at a giraffe with pink underwear.
Today we learned the vocabulary words "reflect" and "absorb". We learned how the eye sees light. We also enjoyed the beauty of optical illusions.
Today we learned what darkness is and what light sources are. A light source produces light (like the sun) while non-sources simply reflect or absorb light (such as the moon, which reflects the light of the sun). Darkness is simply the absence of light. To enjoy the differences of light and darkness, we enjoyed some talented shadow puppet presentations.
Scientific Method vocabulary test was today. Scores will be posted online asap.
Today we watched Mythbusters: Confederate Rocket to find the parts of the Scientific Method. Our first test is tomorrow!
Today we built marshmallow towers by creating a plan and then testing them.
Today we used Spongebob's extensive scientific experience to practice finding the parts of the Scientific Method. Control, variable, hypothesis, and observation/inference were all addressed again.
More vocab instruction today as we learned the final parts of the scientific method. Pictures certainly interrupted our learning significantly.
Today we fiddled some more with the brown box. More experiments were done to find out what the contraption does. We found more questions that needed to be answered.
Today we practiced parts of the scientific method by making observations and inferences of the mysterious brown box. A few experiments were accomplished to find out what it does.
Today we followed up our first day of school by getting started on learning what observations are. We also learned about inferences and how they are different than observations. To explore the differences we tried to figure out the black bottle.
Science has started again in room 28! Fire extinguishers have been installed [not sure why :) ] and we are ready to go. Today Mr. Frenzel got us started with the disclosure documents, which need to be returned by Friday with signatures from both parent and student. We then explored the mysteries of the magic bottle by starting on the scientific method unit. Be sure to sign up for the science Remind so you can get text message reminders of when the tests are.
Today we reviewed the concepts of color, refraction, and darkness. The caves at American Fork Canyon (Timpanogas) and Bear Lake (Minnetonka) can give some perspective on darkness :)
Today we reviewed the concepts of reflection (including angles of incidence and angle of reflection) and opaque/translucent/transparent surfaces.
Darkness is simply the absence of light, which is a form of wave energy. We examined the electromagnetic spectrum.
We took advantage of the sunny day to examine how light (our next unit) is tied to heat by wearing shirts that are half black and half white. Which side got hot first? Why?
