With the help of Horrible Histories, we participated in the ancient Olympics (well, not really a historically accurate reenactment). Congrats to our classroom winners of each event!
Four main forms of government in Greece: Monarchy, Oligarchy, Tyranny, and Democracy. Which do you like best?
We continued with life in Athens and Sparta and explored with http://ancientgreece.co.uk
In preparation for our flipbook, we checked notes for items on geography and gods/goddesses. We also started reading some information about the cities of Athens and Sparta.
As a continuation of Friday's stories, we learned about Odysseus' voyage home from the war with Troy as recorded in Homer's Odyssey. Students added to their notes information about Greek culture and how mortals interact with Greek gods.
With a need to finish some assignments and address some Greek mythology, today we had a day full of stories while we colored maps and got caught up. The Trojan War, how horses were created, how Aphrodite was born, and the original unibrow were topics of the day. Oh, and somehow 6th hour got distracted and heard a few other unique stories (possibly because of the odd assembly).
We started notes to prepare us for the unit assessment, looked at the rubric, and learned the story of Poseidon and Athena.
Today Mr. Frenzel told stories of Greek mythology related to our map, including the tale of Minos and his children. Poor Ariadne! For those who wanted to try the math again: We are labeling the following items on our map: Athens Sparta Troy Mycenae Knossos (Crete) Delphi Ionian Sea Aegean Sea Mediterranean Sea Mt. Olympus Today we started with the Greece unit. We have a map we are working on. Peninsula was the word of the day.
Today we took our test on the Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas. A little Patolli to finish out the day
Today we verified that we had all necessary information on our Inca notes and reviewed for tomorrow's test on Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas.
We read about Incan mummies today. We tried pure chocolate in the form of cocoa nibs, and started our notes on the Incas.
Today we read about the Aztec ball game and watched some video clips of the game. We started our notes on the Aztecs.
We finished up with the Maya today and read about Pacal, king of Palenque.
Today we are learning about Chichen Itza, the Mayan city-state, and the ball game that requires a hoop on the side of the wall.
We read today about the pyramids in the Americas and started a section on notetaking strategies. As content for those notes, we learned about the Olmecs and their farming technique known as intercropping.
Today we read about some of the theories of how humans spread to the Americas, including the Bering land bridge and animal skin boats.
