King Tut's tomb promised a curse upon anyone who disturbed his rest. Was it real? That is up to you to decide! We also watched a short clip about the origins of Halloween- Samhain.
Today we finished the movie about Hatshepsut, the female pharaoh. We also took advantage of the opportunity to play Kahoot for our math facts practice.
Not all pharaohs were men. One of the female pharaohs, Hatshepsut, was very talented with the ability to lead the Egyptians. Today we watched a movie about her.
King Tut is famous for what we found in his tomb. As a pharaoh, though, he accomplished very little (young age, little opportunity to lead due to the vizier, Uncle Aye). Perhaps the biggest mystery is how he died.
In a dramatic shift from polytheism to monotheism, the pharaoh Akhenaten leads Egypt down a different path. Movie day!
To wrap up the week, we mummified Clucky the pharaoh chicken of the 13th dynasty. My hair will return on Monday!
Today we finished our maps, cartouche, and gods. We also watched short videos on how the stone obelisks were cut and transported to the temple sites. Ramesses II and Abu Simbel finished the day.
Today we watched a Horrible History about the Egyptian writing style (hieroglyphics) and prepared our own cartouche. We also started with the Egyptian gods and some of their mythology.
Today we looked at some of the critical elements of Egyptian culture (perfumed fat balls on top the head!) and spent a few minutes on our Egypt maps.
Today we worked on our Egypt maps and tried building pyramids using the BBC game found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/egyptians/launch_gms_pyramid_builder.shtml
Today we used cinder blocks to experiment different ideas of how the Egyptians moved their estimated 2.5 million stone blocks to build the pyramids at Giza. Several videos from history.com were used to see the scope of their construction accomplishments.
Today we are finishing Scoot! and the vocabulary needed for this unit. See the Egypt page for more information about the vocabulary.
All papers that have been turned in up to this point were returned today, and all grades were up-to-date as of last night with test scores entered. Today we started with vocabulary necessary for the Egypt unit.
Today we are using Kahoot to review for tomorrow's test. Parents please come tonight or tomorrow for Parent/Teacher conferences!
Today we watched a video version of the Epic of Gilgamesh, explored the idea of many gods in Mesopotamia, and considered some of the inventions of the Sumerians. Cyrus the Great conquered many of the neighboring city-states but allowed them to keep their religion. Test on Thursday!
With some time to work on our maps we should be done today! An Epic of Gilgamesh adventure to follow!
Where in the world is Mesopotamia anyways? Quality work on our maps is the name of the day.
