News about Tut indicate that they may have found a new chamber in Tut's tomb and will have accessed it within the next three months. We did a reading about the spread of ideas through the Silk Road and compared that to the modern day exchange of ideas with the Internet.

Today we completed our China unit. Just for fun, we looked at a theory that Zheng He might have visited the Americas. Students debated whether the theory was correct or not. End of trimester on Tuesday, November 24th. Grades will be printed and sent home the first week of December.
Today we read about the testing system used by the Han dynasty and practiced our calligraphy skills. A review for tomorrow's test!

We used eggs instead of turtle shells or ox shoulder blades, but the questions all were answered by out talented student oracles.
The First Emperor used strict laws to control the people of the Qin dynasty. Often their punishment was to be sent north to assist with the construction of the Great Wall. We looked at some photos of his tomb, what is believed to be inside the tomb, and the impressive army of clay soldiers placed to guard his tomb.
We concluded the Chinese philosophy of Daoism today and explored the reasons why the Qin family was successful at uniting China.
Due to the field trip, all we had time for was the Chinese philosophy of legalism.

Today we learned about three of the philosophies that surfaced during the Warring States period. Confucianism was covered today, Legalism will be covered Friday after the field trip, and Daoism will come Monday. The personality quiz that was done in class is available on the China page. Answer A aligns with Confucius teachings, B with Legalism, C with Daoism.
To learn about the Shang, Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasties we did a dynasty jigsaw. The readings about each dynasty can be found on the China page under Social Studies.
Today we made maps of China, labeling the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau, the Yellow Sea, the Yellow (Huange He) River, the Yangtze (Chang Jiang) River, the Taklamakan Desert, and the Gobi Desert. We also learned the word "dynasty", where the rulers are all from the same family.
In a simulation of social classes and the idea of theocracy, students learned about what power a pharaoh really had.
Cultures use many symbols to express ideas and meaning. The Egyptians were no different. Today we drew pictures of some of the symbols commonly found in Egyptian fresco and artwork.
